CUHK Innovation Limited was established by The Chinese University of Hong Kong to invest in innovative businesses related to CUHK’s innovations and its startup community.
Vision
Several startup companies founded by CUHK staff, students, and alumni have the potential to become unicorns, indicating that they can achieve long-term growth and success. This highlights the entrepreneurial talents and capabilities of CUHK's community in establishing and managing startups. CUHK Innovation Limited posits that supporting and nurturing successful businesses and commercialising research outcomes benefit our society.
Mission
CUHK Innovation Limited is set in place to enhance the entrepreneurial and achieve the following goals:
- to provide capital to startup companies to accelerate their growth,
- to create and maintain a connection between CUHK and the community of startup companies with the aim of developing a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem and
- to further the CUHK’s mission of promoting and enhancing entrepreneurial culture.

Details
- Dr. Norman Chan was the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) from October 2009 to September 2019. During this period, he was a member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) established by G20 and served as Chairman of FSB's Standing Committee on Supervisory and Regulatory Cooperation from April 2017 to August 2019.
- In 1976, Dr. Chan graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College of CUHK since August 2021 and Vice Chairman of the CUHK Council since April 2023.
- Dr. Chan received an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Business Administration from the City University in 2020, Lingnan University in 2021 and Shue Yan University in 2022 and Honorary Doctoral Degree of Social Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2023. Dr. Chan has founded two Fintech companies, RD Wallet Technologies Ltd and RD ezLink Limited, in 2020 and 2021, respectively. He is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Acquisition Corporation from 2022. He has become the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Web 3.0 since April 2023.

- Professor Mai Har Sham has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Biomedical Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) since 2020. As PVC (Research) in CUHK, Professor Sham oversees the strategic development of research and innovation, entrepreneurship, knowledge transfer and research impact in the University. She provides leadership to research institutes and centres, fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration with academic and industrial partners in strategic research areas. She is in charge of research support services for technology transfer, intellectual property management, start-ups and commercialization platforms to translate research and knowledge into societal impact. Professor Sham is responsible for the administration of research fundings, including university-wide funding schemes to support research equipment and facilities, interdisciplinary group research projects, research talents and partnership with international institutions. She also oversees matters relating to research policies, research data management, ensuring best practices in compliance, research ethics and integrity in the University.
- Professor Sham obtained her BSc and MPhil in Biology at CUHK. She was awarded a Croucher Foundation Scholarship and pursued her PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, U.K. She received her postdoctoral training in Developmental Genetics at the National Institute for Medical Research in London before joining The University of Hong Kong (HKU), where she later became Assistant Dean (Research), Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Director of the Centre for Reproduction Development and Growth in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, and the Associate Vice-President (Research) of HKU.

- Professor Chan Wai-Yee obtained his BSc (Hon. 1st Class) in Chemistry from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1974 and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Florida in 1977. From 1979 to 2009, he served consecutively as tenured Assistant to Full Professor of Pediatrics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, Oklahoma City, and the Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC, USA. In 2001, he was jointly appointed at the US National Institutes of Health and co-founded the Laboratory of Clinical Genomics. In June 2009, Professor Chan established CUHK’s School of Biomedical Sciences and served as the Founding Director and Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences. He was appointed Master of CW Chu College in January 2017, as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments)/Vice President of CUHK in August 2018 and Li Ka Shing Professor of Biomedical Sciences in May 2020. He is also Director of Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (iTERM) and as Co-Director of a number of Joint Laboratories established between CUHK and Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and several Mainland universities.
- Professor Chan is very active in the scientific community, both locally and internationally. He has served as President of the Association of Chinese Geneticists in America, a Member of the Development Committee of the Society for the Study of Reproduction in the USA, and the immediate past President of Hong Kong Institution of Science. Besides being a Council Member of the Shaw Prize Foundation, he also serves as Member of the Hospital Authority Board, Chair of the Hospital Governing Committee of North District Hospital, Member of the Research Grant Council, Director of the Board of the Hong Kong Genome Institute, and a Specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.

- Ms. Cindy Chow is currently the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund. AEF was founded in 2015 with the mission of helping Hong Kong-based entrepreneurs and young people realise their dreams and visions for their businesses and communities. To fulfil this mission, AEF invests into startups and initiates various activities to bolster innovation and entrepreneurship in the community.
- As an MBA holder and a certified public accountant, Cindy joined Alibaba Group in 2007 and has worked in the financial control and planning capacity, most recently as the Senior Director of International Finance until she assumed her current role. Before joining Alibaba Group, Cindy worked in a number of Hong Kong listed companies, specialising in financing, management reporting and planning.

- John is the CFO of Lee Kum Kee Group, founded in 1888 and strives to be the most trusted enterprise for a healthier and happier world.
- Previously, John was with Landmark Capital, Hutchison Port Holdings, Lehman Brothers and PwC. John has been active in the development of Hong Kong’s venture capital industry. He serves as the co-chair of HKVCA’s Family Office Committee.
- John holds Business Administration and Master of Accounting degrees from the University of North Carolina, and serves on its Chancellor’s Global Leadership Council.

Executive Director, BOC International Holdings Limited (BOCI)

- Mr. Cheung King Him Edmund has been holding various positions in the subsidiaries (and funds under such subsidiaries) of BOCI, the investment banking arm of Bank of China Group. He is currently the Interim Head of Private Equity Division of BOCI, managing a portfolio of principal capital investments of BOCI, focusing on ERP, SaaS, robotics, artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies that help achieve manufacturing optimization and automation. Mr. Cheung is also the Acting CEO and Executive Director of CITP Advisors (Hong Kong) Limited, managing an investment portfolio in infrastructure, renewable energy and logistics sectors. Prior to that, Mr. Cheung held various positions in the Corporate and Investment Banking of Citigroup in Hong Kong, and the Global Investment Banking Division of Deutsche Bank AG in Hong Kong and Beijing.
- Mr. Cheung obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago in the United States.
President, qonvolv Ventures

- Wesley has over 20 years of general management and investment experience, and is currently President of qonvolv Ventures, established in 2023, the corporate ventures arm of Tessellation Group. qonvolv Ventures aims to be the hub of industry knowledge and technologies for innovative growth in fashion industry and beyond, and conducts both incubation of creative solutions as new businesses and investments in emerging technologies in manufacturing excellence, digital value chain, green tech, and enablement of future workforce.
- Previously Wesley spent over six years with Esquel Group, having taken on various positions including Chief of Staff to Chairman, Head of Corporate Communications, and Head of Group Finance before establishing Esquel Ventures in January, 2022.
- Prior to joining Esquel, Wesley was an Executive Director of China Infrastructure Partners Fund and Bank of China International Private Equity, evaluating and investing in private equity opportunities with Greater China and Asia angles. Wesley also worked in investments and M&A at Oaktree Capital and Alibaba, after having started his career as a management consultant at Bain & Company.
- Born and raised in Hong Kong, Wesley obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in Civil Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Co-founder & Managing Partner, Beyond Ventures

- Lap Man is the Co-founder and Managing Partner of Beyond Ventures, a Hong Kong-based venture capital firm holding both SFC type 4 and type 9 licenses. He has also served the role of Responsible Officer for the company.
- With the slogan "From Hong Kong, For Hong Kong," Beyond Ventures aims to revitalize and transform the city's innovation ecosystem, positioning itself as Hong Kong's most impactful venture capital firm. Its notable portfolio companies include SenseTime (stock code: 20.HK), SmartSens (stock code: 688213.SH), Prenetics (Nasdaq: PRE), YOHO (stock code: 2347.HK), HKTaxi (acquired by Uber in 2021) and G-NiiB, a biotech spinout from the CUHK, among others.
- Prior to that, Man was the Founder and former CEO of DYXnet Group, established in 1999. Under his leadership, the company emerged as the leading corporate virtual private network (VPN) service provider in Greater China and was subsequently acquired in 2014 by 21Vianet Group (Nasdaq: VNET), the largest carrier-neutral Internet and data center service provider in China.
- Before founding DYXnet Group, Man was one of the brains behind LinkAGE Online, which grew to become the largest corporate Internet service provider in Hong Kong before its acquisition by PSINet in 1998.
- In 2016, Man was honored as the winner of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year China Award.
- He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Japanese Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where his interest in the Internet first sparked during an exchange program at Japan's Sophia University in 1993.
- Currently, Man serves as an Adviser of Our Hong Kong Foundation.
Founder & CEO, BitRock Capital

- Dr. Alfred Shang is the Founder and CEO of BitRock Capital, a venture capital firm that focuses on Fintech and digitalization investments in Greater China and the US.
- Before founding BitRock, Alfred was a partner of Bain & Company and Head of the firm’s Financial Services Practice in Greater China. He advised leading multinational and Chinese financial institutions and investment firms on a wide range of topics, including asset and wealth management, strategy, digitalization, business model design, organization and operational improvement.
- At BitRock, Alfred led investments in several leading Fintech startups, including Linklogis (9959.HK), OneDegree, Sygnum, Fen Bei Tong, and Lingxi Technologies etc.
- Alfred received his Ph.D. degree in Economics with focus on Finance from Harvard University. His research focuses on the interaction between market inefficiency and corporate governance. He also obtained a joint B.A. / M.A. degree in Economics from the University of Chicago.

- Tony joined Gobi’s Hong Kong office in 2016, and currently focuses on building Hong Kong and Southern China Greater Bay Area (GBA) startup ecosystems, as well as the Southeast Asia and the Middle East markets.
- Tony has focused on and invested in more than 70 start-up companies globally, in the fields of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, new materials, industry 4.0/smart manufacturing, cross-border e-commerce & logistics, Internet service SaaS, industrial Internet, Web 3.0 and FinTech.
- Tony has accumulated extensive experience in growing high-tech businesses from his two previous startups related to financial technology and enterprise solutions in big data. He led the overall product roadmap and management, business development & operation, technical algorithm/infrastructure design and implementation, user experience design as well as fundraising for both of the companies.

- Queenie is currently a Director of Hong Kong Growth Fund at EQT, leading investments in the consumer and fintech space. She is based in Hong Kong.
- Prior to joining EQT, Queenie was a Senior Manager at New World Development Company Limited. Before that, she was an Associate with the Equity Capital Markets team at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Her notable investments include Klook, LayerZero, Casetify and RTFKT Studio (acquired by Nike).

- Gordon Yen is the Founding Managing Partner and licensed Responsible Officer of Radiant Tech Ventures Ltd. under the Securities and Futures Ordinance for Type 9 (asset management) regulated activity.
- He is also the Chairman of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network and a Co-chairperson of the Technical Committee of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association.
- Dr. Yen has over 25 years of operational and board-level experience in private and listed companies involving cross-border investments, global supply chain and infrastructure businesses. He has been involved in innovation and technology venture investments since the late 1990s through managing corporate and venture capital fund investments as well as investments as angel investor in transactions involving startups from Israel, Greater China and North America.
- Dr. Yen is also the Non-executive Vice Chairman of Fountain Set (Holdings) Ltd. (SEHK:0420), an Independent Non-executive Director and Chairman of the Sustainability Committee of Impro Precision Industries Ltd. - Mr. Chow is a Managing Partner and licensed Responsible Officer of Radiant Tech Ventures under the Securities and Futures Ordinance for Type 9 (asset management) regulated activity.
- He has over 25 years of investment experience in technology startups that operate in Mainland China, Hong Kong and S E Asia in sectors such as fintech, enterprise solutions, big data, new energy and new materials. He was previously Managing Director and Co-Head of China for JAFCO Asia investments, a wholly-owned subsidiary of JAFCO, which is one of Japan’s leading and largest private equity firm with a global AUM of over US$2.4 billion.
- Prior to that, he was an Assistant Principal with Capital Z Asia Limited, a private equity asset manager headquartered in New York with global assets under management of US$3.8 billion. Mr. Chow earned a BA (Hons) degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is a CFA Charterholder and a CPA (Fellow member) of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
- He actively participates in the community by volunteering his service in various industry associations such as the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and CFA Society Hong Kong and at the same time, he is also an independent director on the boards of China HK Power Smart Energy Group (0931.HK) and Shanshan Brand Management (1749.HK), both of which are listed on the HK Stock Exchange.

- Joyce is currently the Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of CUHK Innovation Limited. She was the Investment Director of Cyberport Macro Fund and was the Managing Director at OurCrowd, a hybrid venture capital platform for investing in global startups.
- With over a decade of experience in hedge fund management, Joyce was the partner and senior portfolio manager of Sumeru Capital, a Greater China-focused equity long/short fund.
- Prior to joining Sumeru Capital, she was a portfolio manager at LIM Advisors, managing an event-driven portfolio of Asia's oldest hedge fund. Joyce started her career at Citigroup Hong Kong, where she first worked as a corporate finance analyst at Global Markets and then as an Investment Counsellor at Private Bank.
